Using Your Calculus Skills to Attract Men
YouTube is a popular video-sharing website where people can find videos on pretty much anything; what many don’t think about, though, is how differently videos on YouTube can be perceived based on the gender of the person who made the video. I watch many educational videos on YouTube and one channel, in particular, that I watch is by Krista King and the name of her channel is “integralCALC,” (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheIntegralCALC?feature=watch). After watching many of her videos, I’ve looked through some of the comments on them and found a range of different views on the fact that she is a female who teaches calculus. Some people didn’t take her videos seriously because they considered math, especially upper-level math, to be something that men are better at. Many argued that they would feel more confident learning calculus from a male. On the other hand, some were impressed that she had calculus help videos on YouTube and that she even has her own website, (https://integralcalc.pathwright.com/). Some men found it very attractive that she was good at calculus. Even though there were many different opinions that I found on this matter, the fact is that they all found it important to bring up that she was a female who was good at math. Another YouTube channel that I’d like to mention is by Jenna Marbles, (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9gFih9rw0zNCK3ZtoKQQyA). Jenna is |
known for making videos that are very crude and straight-forward, something that men are usually noted for. Unlike some other YouTube channels created by women, Jenna isn’t afraid be very blunt and say exactly how she feels on different issues. Something that stands out on her channel is that she has many videos depicting what guys and girls do in certain situations. In many of her videos, she expresses her opinion on different types of girls. The fact that she isn’t afraid to say negative things about groups of females that she, herself, belongs to is admirable. Jenna has strayed far away from what many believe to be the “normal” way females act on YouTube. And, although her demeanor may come across as “masculine,” her physical appearance is actually very feminine. This shows that she can still be feminine, while also displaying characteristics, such as bluntness and vulgarity, which might be seen as masculine qualities.
In general, I would say that most males on YouTube post videos that are comedic or career-related and most females post videos on beauty tutorials and advice. I think a fair amount from both genders post videos on dating and relationships. Some men and women post videos that are only directed towards their same sex. This shows that many videos on YouTube are directed toward a certain audience, as opposed to the general public. Even though many people may not take these things into consideration while browsing YouTube, the fact remains that gender roles on YouTube exist. |
