Beauty Comes In All Shapes and Sizes
After many unrealistic expectations regarding women’s beauty were created, Dove started a campaign titled, “The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty,” (http://www.dove.us/social-mission/campaign-for-real-beauty.aspx). In this touching campaign, Dove has strived to change the view that there is a strict guideline for what makes up a beautiful woman. By being very inclusive in the women they choose for advertising, Dove has shown that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. This message has, not only shown others that beauty can be seen in a wide variety of women, but has also shown that beauty can be seen from the inside out. For a heart-warming video from Dove that might just make you restore your faith in humanity, please visit my videos page, (http://internetidentity.weebly.com/videos.html), and click on the video titled, “Dove Real Beauty Sketches.” Women are under pressure each and every day to fulfill society’s expectations on beauty. You hear stories all over the media about women starving themselves to be a size zero. I watched a YouTube video recently on what a Victoria’s Secret model’s diet consists of and it was crazy to see what |
these models put themselves through in order to have what society views as a “perfect body.” The trend that’s spreading among teenage girls today is the obsession to have a “thigh gap.” It’s disturbing to think that some young women actually stress over not having thighs thin enough to create a gap in between them. With the unrealistic proportions of a Barbie doll and the fact that a size 6 is considered plus-size, it’s no wonder how children in society today have become like this. This obsession to become ridiculously thin is getting way out of hand and it’s comforting to know, at least, that companies like Dove are making a stand.
In reality, it all comes down to perception and, like they say, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The idea that all women need to fit this very specific image in order to be considered beautiful needs to be eliminated. Women shouldn’t be required to conform to society’s expectations on beauty. The promotion of healthy lifestyles and acceptance of all types of women are the only ways of providing hope on this issue in the future and children deserve to have role-models who display this.
